Royal Conservatory of Music

Using Drupal to present a complex organization in a contemporary, welcoming and intuitive manner.

The Royal Conservatory of Music came to OPIN in need of major updates to their web properties. The version of Drupal they were using was seriously out-of-date and they needed to upgrade their software to keep up with their evolving business needs.

The conservatory’s mission - to develop human potential through leadership in music and arts - is the driving force for their standard of excellence in delivering curriculum, assessment, training, certification and social programs. At the heart of everything they do is their website which allows students to register for courses and exams, teachers to get certified and people of all ages to experience live music through concerts and performances.

The Royal Conservatory of Music came to OPIN in need of major updates to their web properties. The version of Drupal they were using was seriously out-of-date and they needed to upgrade their software to keep up with their evolving business needs. OPIN worked with the Royal Conservatory of Music to update their website to decoupled Drupal 8 and AngularJS, the most recent version, and officially launched their new site last fall.

Objectives

The Conservatory’s old web portal was fragmented, had no analytics to understand and measure usage, and utilized multiple web technologies. The various departments used different authors and authoring tools, resulting in issues and inconsistencies with user experiences, “look and feel,” maintenance and updating practices, governance, authoring methods, and workflow.

The Conservatory had an ambitious schedule they needed to meet. With work starting in early May 2017, the foundations of their website needed to be up and running by September 2017. The four months of condensed work depended upon an accelerated development cycle, a team effort comprised of OPIN and RCM personnel, and rapid-fire decision making to meet their timeline and effectively address their needs.

The criteria for the project centred around laying down a solid foundation for a scalable solution on a single, stable platform that can be used for future years of development and expansion. The technology needed to transform and streamline the Conservatory’s online business processes, integrate with external assets and software systems, and ‘Develop Human Potential’ by inspiring customers through their story and mission.

Goals

  • Mobile-first experience: future-proofing for today, from touch technology and beyond.

  • Reinforce the value proposition of the RCM: Developing Human Potential (their Mission) through Leadership in Music Education and the Arts (HOW they will accomplish their Mission) because Music is a Mind Builder (why the HOW is important)

  • Visually demonstrate RCM Brand Values and Personality

  • Single brand experience (rcmusic.com, integrating MusicDevelopmentProgram.org and rcmusic.ca) with geo-specific information info (e.g. Certificate Program requirements, examination dates, Toronto-based offerings, etc) where needed

  • Engage, surprise and delight via curated, customizable and intuitive experiences. These will be delivered by going beyond business lines and offering 360-experiences related to what “developing human potential” means to that stakeholder (see above)

  • Ensure that GTA programming is visible but doesn’t confuse/impede understanding of the wide breadth of what The Royal Conservatory has to offer

  • Findability: They now have children coming to our site for digital resources and courses – they must be able to easily find their way.

  • Quality experience: As an arts organization there is an expectation for the aesthetic experience to be superb.

  • Cleaner experience: (our objective is to reduce content by 50%)

Solutions

OPIN delivered the Royal Conservatory of Music a Public website (https://www.rcmusic.com/) and Exam Registration Portal (https://www.rcmusic.com/app/login). The system serves 500,000 customers that participate in its’ programs every year. OPIN built a decoupled Drupal 8 and AngularJS system that delivers a curated and customized experience that grows repeat usage and value of products and services. 80,000 exams and 500,000 books are purchased through the website each year. Millions of dollars in eCommerce transactions are processed through OPIN’s decoupled Drupal solution.

The redesigned website ‘personalizes’ the experience for their users and creates a desire to learn more. Part of OPIN’s implementation of the new system ensures the RCM digital platform of websites, apps and social media has a coherent message running through all.

An important project objective was to better showcase parents alumni success stories, and explain in an emotional way why they should enrol their children early and keep them enrolled. OPIN ensured to prominently show alumni who have gone onto great things to demonstrate the effects of a musical education on learning, happiness and further life success.

Finally, OPIN used curation, personalization and customization tools to deliver a contextual experience for the customer. OPIN utilized the following personalization tactics:

  • Used geolocation (knowledge of where a customer is) to customize the homepage and certain landing page

  • Used the knowledge we already have from a visitors profile (if they are a parent, teacher, student or all of the above) to show them a relevant topic

  • Used a landing page strategy with pages tailored to the important business lines like the Glenn Gould School of Music.

  • The web design incorporates a fluidly mobile approach, configured for all screen and device sizes without straying from the format, regardless of the type of content or device used.
